Wood and Construction Moisture Meters

These meters are designed for measuring the moisture content of wood and construction materials. Important to know if you are harvesting wood for sale as firewood or building materials.

Mill sawyers use a moisture meter to identify certain logs that are properly cured for cutting into expensive boards. The mill can also use the moisture meter to tell them if the drying process is on schedule as in large heated kilns for removing moisture from stacks of lumber.

Firewood salesman charge a premium for "seasoned" wood where the moisture content is low enough to burn adequately however "green" wood that is too wet to burn is sold far cheaper. Wood needs approximately 1 year to season properly.

Relating to wood properties, the moisture content is defined as the weight of the water contained in the wood expressed as a percentage of the ovendry weight of the wood. Thus, the moisture content may range from zero for ovendry wood to over 100 percent when the water in the wood weighs more than the wood substance.

These meters can even be used for other non agriculture related materials such as drywall, brick, tile, concrete and roofing.
