Thermometers and Temperature Testing

There are many applications in precision agriculture where knowing temperature is important.  For example:

• Soil temperature using a probe is important for propagation
• Compost temperature is important for knowing when to turn and to add water.
• Leaf temperature with an infrared thermometer is one of the greatest indicators of water and heat stress
• Greenhouse temperature to know whether to open the windows.
• Outdoor temperature is important for deciding whether to to use crop protection to protect from hot or cold snaps. Ambient air temperature will also allow you to make decisions such as whether you are likely to need to irrigate on a certain day or whether it is the right temperature to spray your crops.

Thermometers in their various forms are one of the most basic yet critical tools a farmer needs.
